I see Griffin addressed Fruitbat as Great Mayan Fruitbat. I found no reference for such a species. I prefer to think of Steve mire along the lines of the Malayan Flying Fox. An absolutely gorgeous, if somewhat shy creature. The one at Henry Doorly Zoo doesn't like people to watch him eat.

Also the Caped Crusader, Batman, styled his identity and costume after a flying fox. He considered the appearance of a flying fox while he was considering his new crime fighting identity, to be a sign. The bat is a creature of the night, and a flying fox, with its six foot wing spread can be terrifying.
